The King of Contacts - Domenick Nati

When beginning a career in the music business, most artists think they just need to go into the studio and make a hit record. However, they forget that it is the music BUSINESS. Part of that business is talking to press, making appearances, branding and the list can go on and on and on. The people that handle this are public relations specialists. They can also be known as publicists. These are the people that get you placed in as many blogs, magazines, tv shows, radio interviews, and every other outlet, so the public can know who you, the artist, is.
I was recently able to chat with Domenick Nati, the owner of Nati Celebrity Services, about what his company is doing for musicians in the entertainment industry. If you are looking for the inside scoop on how a publicist can further your career, I suggest you continue to read.

For the past six years, Nati Celebrity Services focused their work on athletes such as Sterling Sharpe, Mugsy Bogues, and Kyle Busch to name a few. In July of 2011, the company decided it was time to make a mark in the music world. The first artist to get their expertise was the recently released from prison hip hop artist DMX. The next major name to request Nati’s services is super producer Cavi who produces for artists such as Cee-Lo and Macy Gray. Nati Celebrity Services roster is definitely building quickly, but major artists aren’t the only focus. The company has its doors open to small artists as well as big artists. “You can’t just hold on to what you got and shut everybody else out. Everyone deserve’s a shot”, says Nati. Some of the new artists that are getting a shot with Nati are Cali Tha Artist, Surrenda and Kelly Easter.

With the beauty of technology, there are multiple ways to reach an audience today. That is something that Nati tells their clients and hopes they understand. Publicity is something that requires dedication and patience. “This is a process. Artists have to be realistic and cooperative for this to work” says Nati. Recently Nati has kept DMX busy with magazine interviews, cameo’s on BET and Dr. Drew’s “Lifechangers”. Their work with Cavie has increased his exposure level as well. In Cavie’s first week of working with Nati, he became a regular figure in several major websites and now has more work producing music than he had before.

After achieving much success in the athletic world, I wondered what the major differences are when dealing with musicians. Nati said, “The difference is the volume of work with music. There are more outlets with music. Musicians can also have more fans than athletes.” Along with the greater reach that musicians have, attitudes can sometimes come along as well. There are tons of stories out there about musicians with insane demands. “Celebrities are individuals. Some people I can tell are going to be like diva’s. We try to stay away from that.” says Nati.

So for an artist with no arrogant attitude, a great body of work, and the patience to know that it takes time to build up publicity, what’s the cost? Nati explained his rates to me and honestly I was shocked. They were very fair for what you get. “We have a flat rate. $1,000 a month can get you 1-2 hours of work per day, $2,000 can get you 4-6 hours of work, and $4,000 can get you 6-8 hours of work”, Nati said. “We also can do percentage’s if we’re making money”. He also explained that if an artist isn’t happy with the results from Nati’s work, they can fill free to drop them after a month.

The consensus here is that you get what you pay for. But like anything in life, it takes time and hard work to reach the big payoff. The plus with Nati Celebrity Services is that they have a proven background. There are a lot of people who can say they are a publicist or a public relations specialist, but wont have the resume that lists working with artist from varying professional levels yet still open to seek out new talent.
